Keeping Your Patio Clean

Paving and patios are a staple part of our home exteriors. Therefore, regular maintenance is essential to ensure that they are kept looking presentable and complimenting your home at all times. Like any outdoor space, it is of course going to pick up dirt and become a little scruffy over time, which is why it’s your job to keep on top of things so that it remains clean. Surprisingly, it doesn’t actually require much hard work and isn’t a big inconvenience to clean, furthermore, the more regularly you clean it, the easier it will be as there won’t be as much dirt or algae that has gathered there.

People can leave their paving and patios for several years before deciding that something needs to be done about it, and they don’t always know what to do or where to start. So, we wanted to give out a few tips on the best ways to keep your patio clean!

Removing algae

The most common problem you’ll get with patios, is algae. This is a natural thing, and over time it can grow just about anywhere, but paving and patios are a prime place for it. The biggest issue with this is that it can cause lasting damage as well as being a bit of an eye-sore, and making the place look a little less presentable. However, it is easily cleaned up and removed. Laying down some water and bleach makes it easier to scrub off. We recommend pouring a careful amount of this over the patio and leaving it to soak for a few minutes before brushing. If algae is left too long, it can actually have lasting damage on the paving and become harder to erase in the future.

Fixing discolouration

This is actually something you don’t notice a lot, until you start cleaning and see the difference. Over time, even if your patio doesn’t look overly dirty, it will become unclean and this can have an impact on the colour, resulting in slight or dramatic discolouration. Like most things, the more often you clean it, the less significant the difference is. However, if the patio hasn’t been cleaned in quite a long time, it can end up looking like an entirely new place, and also quite a bit bigger!

Using a pressure washer is a quicker and easier way to do the cleaning, however not everyone has one of those, and that doesn’t matter. Soapy water along with a bit of scrubbing can get the job done just fine. Simply fill up a bucket of soapy water and pour it over the area before you begin scrubbing with a brush. Depending on how dirty it is, you may need to repeat this process to get the best results.

Scrubbing away the dirt

There doesn’t have to be anything significantly noticeable, such as algae. Your patio simply may not have been cleaned for quite a while and be in need of some TLC. For general dirt and wear, another method to try is using vinegar and water. The acid in the vinegar makes this an effective substance for getting rid of the dirt once you start scrubbing. We recommend letting the vinegar and water mix soak on the paving for around 20 minutes to achieve the full effect.

Amongst doing this, you can also get to work with pulling out any weeds. It’s inevitable for weeds to grow on your patio with it being an outdoor area, and this can make the appearance look even messier.
